It is a very winter hardy breed with a docile temperament. They are more athletic and take to foraging and free ranging more often than other breeds. Silver Birchen Marans lay dark brown eggs.  Marans can lay 150 -200 brown eggs per year. This variety is not accepted by the American Poultry Association.
